Victorian Dining Room Furniture and Materials from Canonbury Antiques

(Above photo – Extending mahogany table for the Victorian Dining Room )
Driving across Britain, you will come across several buildings constructed during the Victorian period. Even though many had fallen into a state of disrepair, most have been restored and now serve as elegant, luxury villas. Victorian-style houses are beautiful, retaining characteristics similar to the Tudor style. You can spot one thanks to sloped roofs and dormer windows close to the rooftops. Most of these houses borrowed heavily from French architecture, especially ornate details around the doors and windows.

If you love the exterior looks of a Victorian house, you are going to fall in love with the interior. Coming soon after the Regency period, Victorian interiors were classic, trendy, and romantic. The first thing you would notice upon entering a Victorian dining room is the massive chandelier. The chandelier was always a massive focal point.
When it comes to the furniture, you need high-quality, colorful pieces for a complete elegant appearance. Since you would be using the furniture for dining purposes, we are going to describe them in greater detail. Victorian dining room furniture had the following features:
1. Material types
The furniture was mostly made from mahogany, rosewood, walnut, and other exotic woods. They had various kinds of embellishments, including tassels, embossing, and layers of multiple materials. The designers gave a lot of attention to the details and texture of the final product. As such, they were more elegant that art nouveau furniture.
2. Standout Patterns

(Above photo – Victorian dining sets and tables )

Victorian furniture mainly featured intricate carvings full of curvy lines, leafy patterns, floral patterns, and other natural images. It looks almost similar to art nouveau furniture but is differentiated through lines, carvings, and angular shapes. Victorian dining chairs and tables were straight with curves at the bottom, just below the cushions. There are further carves behind the seats and on the legs of the chairs.
3. Upholstery

(Above photo – Extending Victorian Dining Tables )

Furniture makers mostly used plush upholstery with a focus on velvet and other upholstery materials. The colors were primarily dark, lush, and vibrant. Plain white backgrounds were accented using differently shaped patterns in different shades of color. Upholstered furniture often had embellishments and tassels.
4. Wood

(Above photo -Sumptuous mahogany table for the Victorian Dining Room )

Victorian furniture was mostly made of mahogany, rosewood, and walnut. However, several replicas were featuring deep brown, cheery hues. Even though they retain the Victorian look, the reproductions aren’t original. However, they would serve very well for individuals looking to recreate a Victorian dining room in their homes.

5. Proportions

(Above photo – Antique tables that extend via the leaf system )

In the Victorian era, furniture featured large sideboards, massive proportions, and heavy pedestals. The reason for that was to provide character and balance to the decorations on the piece.
Another critical element that went into decorating Victorian dining rooms is the drapes or curtains. The curtains were multi-layered and hung from the ceiling to the floor, thanks to their luxurious materials. The rooms also had oriental rugs or carpets to complete the elegant look.
With the right furniture and furnishings, it should be easy for you to recreate a Victorian dining room in your home today. Please enjoy some videos below:
